Uh MäNoa Tackles Wastewater Emissions with $2M Grant

Researchers at the University of Hawaii have received a $2 million grant to develop a process that could drastically reduce the environmental impact of wastewater treatment, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.

According to a press release, the researchers plan to investigate a new process that could significantly decrease the environmental impact of nitrogen removal methods in wastewater treatment.

Currently, nitrogen is added to wastewater before it's sent to a treatment facility.

Researchers hope to use the new process to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment while increasing energy recovery.

“By developing technology that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions from wastewater treatment while potentially increasing energy recovery, we’re not only addressing global climate concerns but also working towards greater energy independence for our island communities,” researcher Zhiyue Wang says in the press release.

The researchers plan to test the new process at the WaiEanae wastewater treatment facility.
