The Syrian refugee crisis is expected to worsen over the next four years as more than 19 million peoplemore than a fifth of the country's population flee their homes, the New York Times reports.

According to a report by the United Nations Development Program, the crisis in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan, and Egypt is "one of the largest and most protracted displacement crises globally" and will require "some form of assistance," Al Jazeera reports.

"The increased needs are over-stretching traditional donor funding, amplifying the need to diversify funding sources and leverage the private sector and philies to address the complex socio-economic challenges posed by the region," the UN says in a press release.

The Syrian crisis has forced more than 4 million people to flee their homes, according to the Times.

The conflict has created one of the world's worst refugee crises since the end of World War II.

According to the UN, more than 6 million people have fled their homes in Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon since the conflict began in 2011.

The UN estimates that 19 million refugees and their host communities will need assistance by 2024.
